I am a fibre based artist working primarily in paper. In my work I am interested in examining the relationships and residual connections we feel to domestic textile practices and objects of the past. Through an in depth examination of materials and process, I am interested expanding upon these traditional practices as I work to explore them within a contemporary context.
My current body of work employs the use and manipulation of paper surfaces in an attempt to reference a series of ideas inspired by traditional knotting practices. I find a great sense of poeticism in knotting as being one of our oldest, most basic yet sophisticated technologies. Knotting practices are representative of a greater identity, connecting the past to the present as a living tradition.
Similarly, I am interested in exploring the multifaceted relationship we have to paper and its archaic processes, as I work to discover this material through an in depth examination of its inherent transformative, resilient and simultaneously ephemeral qualities.
In my work, paper is hand-spun into thread, crocheted, knotted, starched, stitched and burned, as I work to incorporate the processes that give my materials a voice, persuading them into new forms.
Through my craft, I am able to continue to tap into the meaningful, intuitive and historical practices that employ the use of my hands.
